Oman accepts 10 Guantanamo prisoners http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21577/- jamuna news desk: Oman said it received 10 inmates from the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay on Monday, in a move to reduce their number days before US President Barack Obama leaves office.

The statement from the sultanate's foreign ministry did not disclose the nationality of the prisoners who would reside in the Gulf Arab country on a temporary basis.

"At the request of Sultan Qaboos and the US government for a solution to the question of Guantanamo detainees, 10 of these detainees arrived today in the sultanate to reside here temporarily," the ministry said, quoted by the official ONA news agency.

The latest transfers would leave the number of Guantanamo detainees at 45, based on figures the Pentagon issued when four Yemenis were sent to Saudi Arabia on January 6.

At the time, Obama's spokesman Josh Earnest said he would expect "additional transfers" before the Democrat hands power to President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.

Obama vowed to close the Guantanamo detention facility when he took office in 2009, arguing that detention without trial did not reflect American values.

But faced with Pentagon foot-dragging and stubborn Republican opposition, his administration has focused on whittling down the number of inmates. Trump has called for a freeze on transfers.

On January 3 he tweeted that "there should be no further releases from Gitmo. These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield."

Why coconut can help you lose weight http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21576/- jamuna news desk: Coconuts have not been so popular with calorie counters. They are infamous for their high saturated fat content but 2017 has something else in store for them. Whole Foods Market has predicted that this is going to be a year of everything and anything about coconut. From coconut water, coconut flakes to coconut cookies, coconut lattes and even coconut ice cream, this fruit is going to rule this year. Why? This is what we are answering here.

The saturated fat in coconuts is not the usual saturated fat. It is of a particular kind which is known as medium-chain triglyceride (or MCT). They are hardly ever stored as fat in the body. Rather, they provide energy, more or less like carbs, and without raising blood sugar levels, something that carbs do. In fact, a study published in the International Journal of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders confirmed that MCTs helped in fat and calorie burning in men, leading to less fat storage.

Coconuts are not rich in this macronutrient. For every 100 grams of coconut, the carbohydrate count is a mere 15 grams. If you want to cut down on carbs for your regime, one thing you can go to is coconuts.

Though cocos may contain less carbs and their MCT may help burn fat, they are not low in calories. For every 100 grams of coconut, you are consuming 354 calories. This needs you to keep your consumption low. Dieticians have recommended that ideally one should fulfil one tenth of their daily calorie requirement through coconuts. So, if you have to consume 1500 calories a day, you should eat coconut worth 150 calories.

Facebook to tackle fake news in Germany http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21575/- jamuna news desk: Facebook is introducing new tools in Germany to help combat the spread of fabricated news stories. The world's largest social network said it would enable German users to flag potentially false stories.

The stories will then be passed to third-party fact-checkers and if found to be unreliable, will be marked in users' news feeds as "disputed". It is the first major expansion of the fake news features since Facebook announced tests in the US in December.

"Last month we announced measures to tackle the challenge of fake news on Facebook," the company said on Sunday in a German-language statement."We will put these updates in place in Germany in the coming weeks."

Facebook has been widely criticised after some users complained that fake news had influenced the US presidential election.

German government officials have expressed concern that misinformation on the internet could influence the country's parliamentary election this year.

Last week, the social news site Buzzfeed found Facebook pages were publishing false stories about German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is seeking re-election.

German Justice Minister Heiko Maas has also repeatedly warned about fake news on Facebook, and called on the firm to respect the country's defamation laws, which are stricter than in the US.

In the UK, MPs are set to question executives from Facebook, Google and Twitter about fake news amid fears it is undermining democracy, according to a report in the Sunday Telegraph.

8 men own same wealth as half the world http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21574/- jamuna news desk: The eight richest people on the planet are worth more than the combined wealth of half the world’s population.

The eight men, from Bill Gates to Michael Bloomberg, owning as much wealth as 3. 6 billion people, according to an analysis by Oxfam released Monday.

Presenting its findings on the dawn of the annual gathering of the global political and business elites in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, anti-poverty organization Oxfam says the gap between the very rich and poor is far greater than just a year ago. It's urging leaders to do more than pay lip-service to the problem.

The Oxfam analysis finds the eight multibillionaires - who could share a ride on a golf buggy have a combined fortune of $426billion (£351billion).

The same report a year earlier said that the richest 62 people on the planet owned as much wealth as the bottom half of the population. However, Oxfam has revised that figure down to eight following new information gathered by Swiss bank Credit Suisse.

Oxfam used Forbes' billionaires list that was last published in March 2016 to make its headline claim. According to the Forbes list, Microsoft founder Gates is the richest individual with a net worth of $75 billion. The others, in order of ranking, are Amancio Ortega, the Spanish founder of fashion house Inditex, financier Warren Buffett, Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim Helu, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg, Oracle's Larry Ellison and Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York.

The figures are published ahead of the gathering of the business and political elite at the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland.

The online survey was conducted between Oct. 13 and Nov. 16, 2016.

Fake voter ID of a ’64-year-old Salman http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21573/- jamuna news desk: Morphed pictures and brilliant creations of Photoshop are proof that this country has no dearth of talent. A prankster seems to have recreated a perfectly real-looking fake voter ID card in superstar Salman Khan's name.

The fake card not only has Salman's photo printed on it but also has Saleem Khan as his father's name! (with a spelling error though; 'i' in Salim replaced with 'e'). It further states that Salman Khan is 64 years old. However, a look at the picture on the ID and one would know it's an image downloaded from the Internet.

It is reported that the incident took place during the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections. Someone placed Salman's photo on someone else's ID. It is yet to be confirmed whether it was an oversight on someone's part or it was intentionally mishandled. Either way, we wonder how the 'Dabbang' star would react to this.

Bowie, who died on January 10 last year, was nominated for best British male solo artist alongside Craig David, Skepta and Michael Kiwanuka.

He was also shortlisted in the British album of the year category for “Blackstar”, released on his 69th birthday two days before he died.

Britain’s top music awards ceremony takes place at the O2 Arena in London on February 22, hosted by Canadian crooner Michael Buble.

Bowie won the best British male solo artist award in 2014 and in his acceptance speech, read in his absence by supermodel Kate Moss, he urged Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom.

Ellie Goulding, Emeli Sande, Anonhni, Lianne La Havas and Nao were nominated in the 2017 best British female solo artist category.

Radiohead are up for the best British group award, where they face Little Mix, The 1975, Bastille and Biffy Clyro.

Brits’ colourful history -

Singer-songwriter Rag’n’Bone Man has already been named the 2017 critics’ choice award winner.

The statuette to be received by this year’s winners was designed by the late British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid.

The Brit Award ceremonies have been peppered with colourful incidents.

The 1989 Brits are best remembered for the shambolic presenting skills of model Samantha Fox and Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood.

Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker stormed the stage in protest while Michael Jackson performed surrounded by children in 1996.

In 1998, Chumbawamba vocalist Danbert Nobacon dumped a bucket of iced water over then deputy prime minister John Prescott.

And Adele’s big moment was spoiled in 2012 when her victory speech was quickly cut short to make way for Blur.

Summit warns against unilateral actions http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21561/- jamuna news desk: Representatives of nations at a conference aimed at kick-starting peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians have warned that neither side should take unilateral actions.

In a statement, delegates at the summit in Paris also restated their commitment to the two-state solution.

But they shied away from criticising President-elect Donald Trump's suggested US embassy move to Jerusalem.

Palestinians welcomed the conference, but Israel called it "rigged".

Neither side was invited to participate in the day-long summit, which was attended by 70 nations, but they were were invited to hear the conclusions.

This led the UK government to question how effective the conference, which it decided to attend in "an observer status", could be in solving the conflict.

A Foreign Office statement said it had "particular reservations" about a conference "intended to advance peace between the parties that does not involve them", adding that it had not signed up to the joint communique.

It also expressed concern about the timing of the event - just days before Mr Trump takes over as US president - and the opposition of Israel.

New Zealand need 217 to win http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21560/- jamuna sports desk: A gruesome morning for Bangladesh was highlighted by Mushfiqur Rahim being taken off the field in an ambulance after being struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Tim Southee. The fact that he was batting in the first place, having injured his hand, was a sign of how desperate the situation was for the visitors. They were eventually bowled out for 160 seven overs after lunch and New Zealand were set 217 to win in 57 overs. That's a required rate of 3.8.

Should Kane Williamson and his men pull it off a record that has stood for 122 years would be broken. In December 1894, Australia put up 586 in the first innings and lost to England. Bangladesh were courting similar ignominy having put up 595 for 8 declared when they batted first.

It took several outrageous incidents to bring us to this stage. Four wickets in seven overs between the 13th and 20th, and a freak injury to Kayes, who was asked to open the batting yesterday after keeping wicket for nearly 150 overs. That would have been difficult for a specialist let alone a stand-in. He had retired hurt, but came out to bat again adding 12 runs to his 24.

Shakib was the first to go, swinging wildly at the eighth ball of a day, from Mitchell Santner, when their concentration should have been on survival and popped a catch to mid-on. Mominul did not see a fuller delivery from Neil Wagner, his feet were pinned to the crease, hinting he was expecting a bouncer, and was caught in the slips.

Then the horrible end to Mushfiqur's innings at a time when he seemed to be dealing with the short ball quite well. It took one of them keeping low to eventually consume him.

There would be outcry over how often New Zealand targeted the fingers on Mushfiqur's bottom hand - which might well be broken - but he would have known what he was in for when he decided to bat with a target on him. It isn't in the nature of an international team to shy away from exploiting a weakness. Especially with a come-from-behind Test win on offer. Mushfiqur faced up to the challenge superbly. His bravery would not soon be forgotten. It must be celebrated even if Bangladesh couldn't away with a favourable result.

With Sabbir in the middle, the fans had hope. A naturally aggressive batsman, he spent 51 minutes without scoring - during which he could have been caught and bowled - and batted sensibly with the tail until lunch. After the break though, perhaps worried by Rabbi and Subashis Roy's batting abilities, he began taking a lot more risks and was caught behind for 50 while attempting an on the up square drive. Bangladesh lost their last four wickets for 23 runs as Trent Boult picked up 3 for 53, bowling Roy and Taskin Ahmed with reverse swing.

Merkels mistake on migrants: Trump http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/21559/- jamuna news desk: US President-elect Donald Trump has said German Chancellor Angela Merkel made "one very catastrophic mistake" by admitting more than 1m migrants.

He said Mrs Merkel was by far Europe's most important leader, and that the EU had become a vehicle for Germany.

Mr Trump was giving details of his foreign policy goals in an interview with British and German newspapers. He told the Times and Bild his priority was to create fairer trade deals for the US and have strong borders.

He said the US had to address its trade deficit with the rest of the world, particularly with China. The emphasis for his administration should be smart trade, rather than free trade, he said.

The interview was conducted for the Times by UK MP Michael Gove, who played a key role in the Vote Leave campaign that led to Brexit, and who also has a column in the newspaper.

Asked about a possible deal with Russia, Mr Trump said nuclear weapons should be part of it and "reduced very substantially", in return for lifting US sanctions.

Turning to the Middle East, he condemned the 2003 invasion of Iraq as possibly the worst decision ever made in the history of the country, and said safe zones should have been created within Syria and paid for by the United States' Gulf allies.
