Ronaldo to bag 4th Ballon d’Or coronation http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/20958/-
jamuna sports desk: Cristiano Ronaldo will bag his fourth Ballon d’Or as the world’s top footballer.

The Real Madrid and Portugal star won the Champions League for the second time in three seasons and third time overall after one title with Manchester United in 2008.

He then led Portugal to their first major title at Euro 2016 albeit he went off early through injury in the win over France.

His main rival will be Lionel Messi of Barcelona.

The Ballon d’Or will henceforth be decided by a vote of 173 journalists. Argentina and Barcelona star Messi landed a record fifth crown last year.

A win will lift Ronaldo to within one award of Messi’s record haul of five.

Ronaldo first won the award in 2008 after Premier League and Champions League triumphs with Manchester United. But it was only in 2013 he added his second and he made it a hattrick the following year.

The first Ballon d’Or was won by Stanley Matthews, at the time with Blackpool, who beat Alfredo Di Stefano for the inaugural title in 1956.

Up to 1994 only European players were eligible.

The first non-European to win it was the following year, AC Milan’s Liberian star George Weah.

From 2007 it honoured the world’s best player, with FIFA under former president Sepp Blatter entering into a deal with France Football in 2010 to merge the Ballon d’Or with FIFA’s best world player honour.

Suicide bombing kills 20 Yemen soldiers at military camp http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/20957/- jamuna news desk: A suicide bomber killed 20 soldiers and wounded around 30 more on Saturday at a military camp in Yemen's southern city of Aden, where jihadists are active, a military source said.

The attacker detonated his explosives belt as hundreds of troops gathered to receive their monthly pay at the barracks in Al-Sawlaban near the city's international airport, the source said.

Security sources said earlier that a bomb planted by unknown individuals had been behind the deadly explosion.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Yemeni authorities have for months pressed a campaign against jihadists who remain active in the south and east of the war-torn country.

The Islamic State group and its jihadist rival Al-Qaeda have taken advantage of a conflict between the government and the Huthi rebels, who control the capital Sanaa, to bolster their presence across much of the south.

IS and Al-Qaeda have carried out a spate of attacks in Aden, headquarters of Yemen's internationally recognised government since allied fighters retook the port city from the rebels last year.

An IS militant rammed his explosives-laden car into an army recruiting centre in Aden in August, killing 71 people in the deadliest jihadist attack on the city in over a year.

On Monday, Yemeni authorities arrested eight suspected IS jihadists implicated in a spate of attacks targeting security personnel in the city this year.

A Saudi-led coalition has since March 2015 supported loyalist forces fighting the rebels.

Hong Kong in vote for leadership panel http://www.jamunanews24.com/news-detail/en/20955/- jamuna news desk: Voting is under way in Hong Kong in elections for the territory's Election Committee, the panel that chooses the next leader.

Only 6% of Hong Kong's voters can take part and those who are allowed to cast ballots are seen as mostly pro-China.

The vote is widely criticised as undemocratic but pro-democracy groups are putting forward more candidates than ever before.

They say they disagree with the system but hope to fight it from the inside.

Results are expected on Monday morning.

The BBC's Helier Cheung in Hong Kong says the vote comes at a tense time for the former British colony.

Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997 under an agreement that it would enjoy special rights and freedoms.

But activists now accuse China of meddling in Hong Kong's affairs, she says.

The government has taken several pro-democracy lawmakers to court, saying that they should be disqualified.

Hong Kong chief executive CY Leung recently said he would not seek re-election in March, citing family reasons.

He has often been accused by pro-democracy campaigners of putting China's interests above those of the people of Hong Kong.

In 2014, two years after Mr Leung took office, massive pro-democracy rallies in Hong Kong failed to win any concessions from him or from China.
