Cops rampage Sundarbans campaigners during hartal
jamuna news desk: Sundarbans campaigners during a half-day hortal today (Thursday)in Dhaka protesting the Rampal power plant near the world's largest mangrove forest .
Police fired two dozen of teargas shells at Shahbagh intersection and confined the pro-shutdown supporters inside Dhaka University around 6:00 am.
The law enforcers also used water cannon to disperse the protesters. Picketers, in return, hurled a few brickbats.
Police fired around 20 teargas shells to keep the picketers from occupying the streets, Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station.
Mizanur Rahman, an assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said the law enforcers retaliated to ensure smooth vehicular movement when the protesters tried to take to the Shahbagh intersection.
None was reported to be 30-40 injured during the clash.
Meanwhile in Paltan, pro-shutdown supporters brought out a procession peacefully under police watch. Leaders and activists of the Natural Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports participated in the march.
Pro-shutdown demonstrations were also carried out in Shantinagar and Mohammadpur areas without any news of confrontation.
Vehicular movement on the city streets was observed to be marginally thinner than the usual office hour traffic. Police were seen stationed through all key points in the city.
