BNP aggrieved over search committee: Fakhrul
jamuna news : BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said that they are not only frustrated but also aggrieved over formation of the search committee for reconstituting the new Election Commission (EC).
The president has given us an extreme example of neutrality! We are not only frustrated but also aggrieved. The entire search committee is the choice of the Awami League government,” Fakhrul said.
He came up with the remark while addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesh Labour Party, a component of BNP-led alliance, at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity auditorium in the capital, marking ‘January 25-the Democracy Killing Day.
Justifying his remark that the entire search committee is the choice of the incumbent government, he said that the government-appointed chairman of Public Service Commission, comptroller general and pro-vice-chancellor of Chittagong University have been made members of the search committee.
I came to know about the six-member search committee from mass media but I could not know about the gazette notification to this end, the BNP secretary general said.
He quoted Chittagong University pro-VC Shireen Akhter’s reaction to a private TV channel saying the country is now being run following the ideal of Bangabandhu.
The BNP leader said that she (Shireen) had told the TV channel that she would carry out the responsibility given to her by his (Bangabandhu) competent daughter Sheikh Hasina as a ‘sacred one.’
“Therefore, it may be well understood what type of a neutral search committee has been formed,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
“BNP considered the president to be the final institution, the biggest guardian of the state. This is why, we always expected from him a neutral decision,” he said.
“It is unfortunate for both the BNP and the nation that although a scope had been created to rescue the nation from the prevailing political crisis, but the president did not avail of the opportunity,” he lamented.
The BNP leader said BNP does no know what type of EC will be formed by this search committee. “Once again, the nation was pushed into uncertainty and instability,” he stated.
He alleged that the ruling party did so knowingly in a bid to hold another general election like that of January 5, 2014.
“But, it won’t resolve the perennial problem, he said, adding if the prevailing crisis is not resolved then the search committee, having no reflection of people’s aspiration, will ever be able to do its task,” he asserted.
