AL to meet president today
jamuna news : The ruling Awami League will sit in talks with President Md Abdul Hamid today for placing its proposal on the formation of new Election Commission (EC).
The talks are scheduled to be held at 4:00pm.
Party insiders said that Awami League will not place any new proposal rather will only propose formation of a search committee to appoint a new EC.
During the talks with the President, the party may also present the country’s electoral procedures used during the period between 1975 and 1996, they said.
Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lead a 19-member delegation to Bangabhaban, party sources said.
Other members of the team are AMA Muhith, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, HT Imam, Mohammad Zamir, Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Sahara Khatun, Mohammd Nasim, Syed Ashraful Islam, Obaidul Quader, Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdul Matin Khasru, Anisul Haque and Hasan Mahmud.
The President has taken the move to hold talks with the political parties to have their opinions for constitution of a new EC as the tenure of the incumbent EC will ends in February.
The head of the state started talks with the political parties from December 18 on reconstitution of the EC, which will arrange the next national polls slated for 2019.
The talks began with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The President has already held talks with 22 political parties of the country.
Majority of the political parties during their talks with the President proposed enactment of a law to from new EC.
