Zila Parishad polls heldJamunanews:Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed today said election to the first-ever Zila Parishad (district council) was held in a fair, free and peaceful manner.

"Representatives of all others local government bodies voted the representatives of Zila Parishad from 9 am to 2 pm . . . the polls were held in a free, fair and credible manner in 61 districts across the country," he told in a press conference at the Election Commission Secretariat this evening.

He said necessary security arrangements were ensured during the Zila Parishad polls which were held as the five-year tenure of the government-appointed 61 district administrators expires this month.

Only the elected representatives of other local government bodies - upazila parishads, union parishads, municipalities and city corporations -- are the electorates of the zila parishad elections of total 61 districts out of 64 administrative districts.

"As many as 63,143 voters, including 14,800 female ones, franchised their voting rights at 915 centers across the country to elect a chairman and 20 members including five in reserved women seats, for each Zila Parishad in a district," according to a source of EC secretariat.

A total of 3,938 candidates - 146 for the post of chairman, 806 reserved women seats and 2,986 general members - contested in the much-talked Zila Parishad election today.

The grassroots leaders of ruling Awami League are about to win most of the posts of the chairman and members as BNP remained out of the electoral race.
