Narayanganj City Corporation begins vote
jamuna news : Polling has started for the Narayanganj city corporation polls on Thursday.Voters Started around 8:00am, the voting will continue uninterrupted until 4:00pm today, according to election officials and the Election Commission.
Narayanganj has begun voting to elect its next city corporation mayor and a bunch of councillors amid multiple layers of tight security to avert any untoward incident.
Nearly five lakh voters in the city's 27 wards will exercise their franchise. There are a total of 174 voting centres across Narayanganj city, among which 137 have been marked “risky”.
A total of seven candidates are running for the mayoral post – the hottest contestants being Selina Hayat Ivy, Awami League’s candidate, and Shakhawat Hossain Khan, candidate of BNP.
Unlike most elections, the polls campaign in Narayanganj was free from violence this year.
Around 9,500 members of paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh, elite force Rapid Action Battalion, police and Ansar members have been deployed for security.
For the first time in many years, an election is going to be held in Narayanganj with no contestant from the influential Osman family that dominated the local Awami League's politics for decades.
Salim Osman and his younger brother Shamim Osman are lawmakers from Jatiya Party and the AL.
