Media to uphold the four basic state principles: Inujamunanews: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, said that the media was pledge-bound to the constitution and its task was to uphold it, particularly the four fundamental principles of the state.

"It doesn't matter if the media is pro or anti-government, what is important is that the basic tenets of the state are adhered to," he said.

The minster was speaking as chief guest at a two-day conference on the role of the mass-media held at the Dhaka University's Nawab Ali Senate Bhaban.

The minister explained "We appreciate criticism, as it helps government rectify excesses, if any. But that does not mean that the press could question the very foundations on which our state was built."

"Under no condition should freedom fighters be equated with Razakars. This is not tolerable," he said

He also highlighted the great strides the mass media had made under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said that the media was flourishing and laws were being updated to institutionalize the media.

"We believe that the media is the mirror of democracy and the
institutionalization of democracy implies a similar need for the media, too, "he added.

The meeting was chaired by the chairperson of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department Dr Mofizur Rahman and among others Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, media advisor to the prime minister and Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), were present as special guests.

Dr Golam Rahman, Chief Information Commissioner, read the key note speech on the media landscape.

Later Hasanul Haq Inu addressed a meeting at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) and appreciated their brave role at different critical junctures of the country.
